The causes of bursting batteries

In the lead starter batteries used for automobiles and tractors of various types, there is a nasty little known feature that must be taken into account during the operation. The fact that in the process of charge, at its final stage, the battery begins electrolytic decomposition of water contained in the electrolyte. In this case Gases: hydrogen and oxygen. Part of the emitted lattice oxygen oxidizes the positive plates, which leads to an acceleration of corrosion. Hydrogen and most of the evolved oxygen out of the electrolyte on the surface, creating the appearance of its boiling point, and accumulate under the covers in each cell of the battery. If the vent is not clogged with dirt and there are no other obstacles, through them, this mixture of gas comes out and is easily dispersed into the environment. The ratio of oxygen and hydrogen is that is a mixture, which in the presence of sparks or open flames burning in the explosive regime. Force of the explosion and its consequences is entirely dependent on the amount (volume) of gas accumulated at this point. For example, at an elevated value of the charging voltage of the generator (malfunctioning voltage regulator) increases the intensity of formation of gas inside the battery and, consequently, its selection. At a low level of electrolyte (no regular refills) increases the volume of gas under the cap cells of the battery.
